Georgetown University Celebrates Renovated Jewish Gathering Space

Staff Report / DClocal.org

Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. held a dedication ceremony on September 14 to mark the completion of renovations on Ammerman Makóm, the university’s Jewish gathering space located in the Leavey Center.

The renovations include an expanded sanctuary area, enhanced social space, and a reoriented ark, allowing members of the Jewish community to face Jerusalem during prayer.

The updated space opens as the university welcomes Rabbi Ilana Zietman, the new director for Jewish Life.

Makóm is one of eight sacred spaces available for the university community, which includes individuals from all faith backgrounds. Georgetown has also opened other significant spaces, such as the Dharmic Meditation Center in 2021, which was the first of its kind on a U.S. campus, an ecumenical chapel for Christian communities in 2022, and the Yarrow Mamout Masjid in 2023, which features ablution stations, a spirituality and formation hall, and a halal kitchen.
